Tench Fishing Locations

Tench Fishing Locations

Tench can normally be found in slow moving or still waters. Lakes are predominantly their main habitats, although lowland rivers can be fished to catch them. They prefer muddy waters with lots of plant life, and can withstand waters with extremely low oxygen concentration.

Below you can find different waters which tench can be caught in, as well as water areas to fish at each location. If you know of a tench venue that we should list below please let us know.

Lakes

Tench are mainly found in lakes due to the fact that they dislike fast moving water. A popular venue for catching tench are gravel pits, which are effectively extremely deep lakes. The best approach to catching tench on lakes is to fish at night time amoungst reeds or in the margins. The best baits to use for these conditions are sweetcorn, worms, maggots, and casters.

As tench are fairly light eaters, don't overfeed your swim. Simply place your bait in position and feed using groundbait to attract tench into the area. Small amounts of the bait you are using can be effective, but remember not to throw in too much.

Rivers and Canals

If you are going to fish a river for tench first find out that they are present on the stretch of water you are targetting. Make sure the current is slow or almost still, otherwise your chances are slim. Again, make sure that you do not overfeed your swim and if you can, fish late at night or very early morning.

Remember that tench are easily spooked and a very wary species of fish. Stay low out of sight and keep noise to a minimum, also try not to cast to frequently as any tench in the area will be scared off by the constant sound of you casting. Good baits to use when fishing a river or canal for tench are most types of worms, maggots, casters, and sweetcorn. Don't forget to feed small amounts of groundbait to attract any tench nearby.
