Ledgering / Bottom Fishing

Ledgering or bottom fishing is a popular method for catching tench. A simple sliding rig can be setup with bait positioned 1-2 feet away on a medium sized hook. The important thing to remember when fishing for tench is that the lighter the tackle the better. As tench are easily spooked using a smaller weight could be the difference in one taking, or swiming past your bait.

When ledgering for tench the bait you use should not be too large, as they only have small appetites. Popular baits that can be used are sweetcorn, maggots, casters, worms, and small pellets.

Float Fishing

Float fishing for tench is another popular method. It allows anglers to use a light setup so that any tench that are feeding will not be spooked. Float fishing also ensures you target the exact area, such as within reeds and water plants, as your indicator should be right above where you are fishing. After you plummet the depth of water, set you float using the right weights and positions.

The baits you will use when targeting tench are smaller in size, so you may find you will catch lots of nibblers. All in all it is important to pick the right location and time so that you maximise the chance of a tench taking your bait, rather than the smaller, less desirable fish! Good baits to use when float fishing for tench are sweetcorn, worms, maggots, casters, and small pellets.
